Rotary Literacy Project

Rotary Literacy Project is a digital education project being implemented in 35 community schools of Kaski, Parbat, Baglung, Tanahu, Lamjung and Gorkha Districts, Province 4 (Gandaki Pradesh).  School curriculums/textbooks developed by Curriculum Development Center (CDC) are used in schools through the CEHRD learning portal (online), or using a looma device (offline). Looma is a low-power consuming audiovisual projector that brings interactive teaching-learning activities to the classrooms. This can be powered up by a solar rechargeable battery as well. Thus, schools without access to electricity and computers can also use this device. To navigate through the screen the wireless wand is used, which helps the teacher move around the classroom as they teach. A team of Nepali and international organizations incorporate educational contents, which helps to teach according to the curriculum with related materials provided by this device. The books used are according to the National Curriculum and all of the educational materials are organized in a similar manner.  ERDCN conducts training to develop teachers' capacity in the use of digitalized pedagogy and has recently worked with the CEHRD and CDC to set up a learning portal that is hosted through their server. The main advantage of this is that accessing this server through mobile data will cost less to nothing at all. This way the students without access to Wi-Fi internet can also continue their learning during the pandemic.

Following are the objectives of the project: More than a thousand Nepalese children in under-resourced schools will

  • speak and write better English,
  • analyze and apply their knowledge more confidently,
